Antonio Galloni has published reviews on the Poggiotondo current releases on his site, Vinous:
91 pts – Poggiotondo Vigne delle Conchiglie 2008
The 2008 Chianti Riserva Superiore Vigna delle Conchiglie shows lovely depth and nuance in its aromas and flavors. Here, too, the cool nature of the year comes through in the wine’s inward personality, but the balance between fruit, acidity and oak is fabulous and also notable for the year. A delicate finish rounds things out nicely in this harmonious single-vineyard Chianti.
90 pts – Poggiotondo Marmoreccia Syrah 2008
The 2008 Marmorecchia (Syrah) is beautiful. It isn’t especially varietally expressive, rather it is a wine that speaks more to the intense minerality of the vintage and the qualities of this site. Plums, black cherries, menthol and spices flesh out on the finish.
89 pts – Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva 2009
The 2009 Chianti Riserva flows with ripe raspberries, flowers, licorice and mint. There is sweeter tannin and greater juiciness to the fruit that gives the 2009 an element of pliancy and depth that the leaner 2008 doesn’t have. This is a gorgeous Chianti to drink now and over the next few years.
88 pts – Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva 2008
The 2008 Chianti Riserva shows good depth in its dark fruit. The Riserva was fermented in open top oak vats and aged in small French oak barrels, and it is the wood tannin that seems to attenuate the finish a touch. Otherwise, this is a fine showing.
88 pts – Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore 2009
The 2009 Chianti Superiore emerges from the glass with dark cherries, menthol, licorice and fresh flowers. Aging in cask keeps the Superiore fresh, vibrant and perfumed. This is a lovely wine to drink now and over the next few years.
88 pts – Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore 2007
The 2007 Chianti Superiore (90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot) is a sleek, racy wine with impeccable balance in its ripe fruit. The wine reveals a long, harmonious finish, with pretty floral notes that add a sense of lift on the close. This is a terrific effort from Poggiotondo.
87 pts – Poggiotondo Vermentino 2011
The 2011 Vermentino caresses the palate with melon, pears, flowers and figs. The 2011 stands out for its soft, textured fruit and inviting personality.
