November 2013
Everyone wants to get the most bang for their buck, especially when it comes to wine. While there are plenty of occasions that warrant an expensive bottle, most of the time we’re all just looking for delicious selections that are easy on the wallet. We also want a lot of them, as each one provides something special and satisfying: the ability to transport ourselves to that wine-producing region without ever having to board a plane. In support of this honorable and timeless mission, we present our annual list of the Top 100 Best Buys of the year.
# 70: Plantagenet 2010 Hazard Hill Shiraz – 89pts
This medium-bodied Shiraz is supple, immediately drinkable and complex— what more could one want for under $15? Find plummy fruit, meaty elements, cracked pepper and hints of mocha and a long, savory finish here. Old Bridge Cellars. – J.C.
# 76: Chilcas 2010 Reserva Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon – 89pts
This is round and dark up front, with a touch of bacon on the nose. It feels fresh and medium in power, with blackberry, plum and chocolate flavors that roll into a peppery, spicy finish. Old Bridge Cellars. – M.S.
